In 2014, the fi rst stone of the disappeared – Stolperstein
– was laid in České Budějovice. Now, ten years later, more
than 60 of them can be found in 25 places on the streets
of the South Bohemian metropolis, and more are being
added. But what stories and tragic fates lie behind the
names and brief dates on the brass plaques? That's what
our guide will tell you. The majority of these stones commemorate
local victims of the Holocaust. Judaism has
been associated with Budějovice since the Middle Ages.
The second part of the guide will therefore take you to
places connected with the history of the Jews of České
Budějovice. The third topic of the guide is the unique
magazine Klepy, which was secretly published by the
Jewish youth of České Budějovice in the years 1940/1941
in order to escape the oppressive reality of the Protectorate,
at least for a while. Aft er more than 80 years, you
can follow not only the footsteps of Klepy, but especially
the fate of its creators.
